All of the materials from our Advisory Board’s visit on May 21, 2012 are now posted on our progress page. (This includes meeting summaries as well as a new project update.) In addition, we’ve also posted the slides and notes from their presentation during the Maine Libraries United conference.
Project Updates
Upcoming presentation by our Advisory Board members
On Monday (May 21st), as part of the Maine Libraries United conference the members of our Advisory Board will be giving attendees a national perspective on shared print initiatives. We are delighted that Lizanne Payne, Constance Malpas, and Bob Kieft are willing to share their knowledge with us, as they’ll discuss current shared print projects, research involving HathiTrust and libraries, and trends in collaborative collection development.
The presentation will be in Little Hall, Room 120 on the campus of the University of Maine at Orono.
If you have any questions, please contact us.
Meeting summaries are now searchable
When the site first launched, our meeting summaries were posted as Google Docs, and therefore external content that could not be searched. We are now pleased to announce that all summaries have been converted to pages, and can be searched by the site’s search engine. We have no doubt that this will make things easier for all of us in the long run!
If you have suggestions for other site features, please let us know!
Slides from February 24th presentation
On February 24, 2012, members of the project team presented an overview of large-scale digital initiatives. Held at Colby College and open to all employees of partner institutions, the presentation covered the following initiatives: Digital Public Library of America; Europeana; Google Books; HathiTrust; and Internet Archive & Open Library. Slides from each presentation are now available, as is audio. (Due to a recording snafu, audio is not available for the HathiTrust presentation.)
Website additions, Subcommittee activities
Over the past couple of weeks we’ve begun to add pages for our project subcommittees, focused on technical services/systems work and collection management, respectively. Our goal is to provide these spaces as a place for subcommittee members to view and post project activities and documentation in addition to general information such as meeting summaries. The subcommittee pages are linked from the People portion of the site.
Speaking of subcommittee activities, the Technical Services subcommittee is making steady progress on the OCLC reclamation project and is scheduled to have that wrapped up by the end of the month. They are also investigating the WorldCat Knowledge Base as a method for incorporating electronic holdings into WorldCat. The Collection Management subcommittee is working on developing a formula to apply to our shared monographs in order to assist with decision-making. (If you have any opinions on data elements to consider, please let us know!)
Collection Analysis work picking up
As some of the reclamation-related work is beginning to wind down, the collection analysis is gaining steam. The collection management subcommittee met on January 10th to begin to figure out how we’ll tackle the decision-making for so many titles without going title-by-title. The summary of that meeting is up on the Progress page. Another meeting has been scheduled for the 31st, where we’ll be looking at a sample of ~200 titles and trying to place them in some broad categories.
